Delightful, the creativity and individuality that went into the Segas of 20 years ago. Brand language all over the place, though – how would you know it’s a Sega?

Sega Hi-Tech Land Tateishi. I met it on my 1-day-20-Segas Tokyo tour. In every game centre, the local flavour – the sense that the arcade belongs to that place and is unlike the others – was fascinating and lovable.

Tateishi was the maddest. Recommended.

Both the interiors and exteriors of new Sega game centres are a lot more battery-farm.

Apparently Aleatoric Architecture

Tateishi Segafront’s a weird design mashup: 1930s Art Deco cinema entrance, 1940s militaristic stars and 1950s sailorboy babystripe, silver starshooting hopes of the spaceage 60s, bubblebumped 1970s lavalamp blobs, and Sega’s 80s iconography superimposed off-centre.

Staring Down the Brown Tube

The lights in Hey are famously blue. First foot off the IN escalator is *that* row of a dozen or so Egrets on either side. They actually have a Kodak PhotoPoint(TM) standee there now, yellow greyed by the blue light, with a cutout for where experts say to point your camera. That’s actually true!
